File Transfer Protocol - FTP Programs- What Are They?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP programs are essential network protocols enabling the migration of files between distant and remote computers. It supports the simultaneous transfer of huge data volumes from a personal computer to a server and vice versa. In other words, FTP programs are used for uploading and downloading files to servers from around the world. This allows you to upload your files from your own computer to a server located, let’s say, in Australia or in Brazil.

There are many types of FTP programs but they are not alike. Their features vary but they accomplish the same purpose.

FTP programs exist because some servers require the use of an ftp software program; others do not require the use of this tool because they have their own built-in FTP program. One example of this is Omnis. With Omnis, you can upload your files to their server from inside your Omnis account.

The first thing you need to do when looking for hosting for your website, you need to find out if you are going to need to use and FTP program. The good news is they are FREE! One of the most popular ones are FilleZilla and CuteFTP.

Setting up one of these free FTP programs can be a little difficult but once you learn how to set it up, you will feel like a pro.
